Benyamin Netanyahu, the Minister of Finance, attacked the Histradut Labor Federation in unprecedented and no uncertain words.
¿I¿m sick and tired of the fact that a small group of unions is holding the country by the throat. This period is over, these are the unions¿ last acts,¿ said Netanyahu. ¿The rule of the monopolistic unions is nearing an end,¿ he said today in response to the Histadrut¿s widening of the strike.
He continued his attack on the union leaders, ¿The damage from the strike is immediate. Thousands will be fired from their workplaces and their unions. The workers are voting with their feet every day and coming to work, but they are not able to work because they are ruled by the unions. Has anyone asked them what they want? Are we living in the 19th century? I¿m sick and tired of this and we are going to stop it,¿ Netanyahu added.
¿I still don¿t understand who the unions are protecting, their inflated salaries? Their excessive benefits? They certainly are not defending the workers, only themselves. In all western economies the institution of unions who can shut down the country doesn¿t exist any more. It won¿t last much longer here either,¿ said Netanyahu.
